mom wont let me get more dolls!! only have 2!!

i only have 2 dolls and my mom wont let me get anymore, even if i have enough $$ to buy my own!! any suggestions to persuade my mom to let me get another doll???

Sit your mom down and show her both this board and ebay. Show her that these dolls are a good investment for the future, if at any time you do become uninterested. Unlike other toys, AG's retain their value if not gain in value. Also show her that many of us grew up with AG and are now adults and while we may have "phased" out of active AG collecting, as adults we no less treasure our dolls.

Emphasise that these dolls will give you a better return than any other toy on the market... you can take her to ebay and compare and contrast. Show her the positives, tell her that life is short and we should really persue what truely makes us happy in life.

Also sit down with her and talk to her about her feelings, why does she not want you to continue to collect? If she feels that you are really listening and earnestly interested in what she has to say she will be more willing to listen to you.

Did she give you a specific reason why you couldn't buy another doll? Does she want you to save some money or buy something else?

I think that the best way to deal with this is to show your mom that you can be financially responsible. Start saving half of what you earn. Let your mom know that you want to be responsible, and that you're not going to waste your money. Show her that she doesn't have to worry about what you spend the other half of your money on and that if it is your money, you can be trusted with it. It's ok to disagree with your mom, you're different people, but don't be upset about it. Show her your point of view, and do your very best to see hers. Don't be angry or rebellious, it won't help at all. Just be openminded [img]smile.gif[/img]

Everyone has given you good advice, but if it doesn't work, collect for the dolls you have and enjoy them. When you are older and out of your mom's house you can get a ton more dolls.

I only had 3 dolls when I was younger. It wasn't until 10th grade that my mom decided I could start getting more than that. She just didn't think a young girl needed to have so many expensive dolls, but that I needed to enjoy the ones I had. Now I have 11, and I think they are more special because I've collected them over most of my (relatively short) lifetime, rather than get them all at once.

Don't worry about, many of us only had one or two to begin with. It wasn't until I was an adult that my collection grew beyond Samantha and Alex. I know that I need to stop because I need/want to change my life style and begin working towards the future.

I agree with others here who have said it wouldn't hurt to ask her "why?"

My parents would not let me have ANY American Girl dolls, but they didn't mind what I did with my own money. In fact, I think they were really happy to see me diligently save up and get AG dolls rather than candy (which I tended to spend all my money on! [img]wink.gif[/img] ). But the fact that she won't let you buy them despite having your own money means that there must be some other reason she has. If you post that for us, maybe we can help with some more specific advice. (If not, as has been mentioned, it never hurts to just enjoy what you have . . . I was the happiest when I had just two AG dolls, because I had time enough to play with both of them, and one for friends to play with when they visited.)

I think that the pictures you see here with many dolls are unusual. Many members here are adult collectors or adults who collect with their daughters. My SIL wouldn't let her DD have any AGs because she felt like it was outrageous to spend that much money on a doll and doll clothes. However, she spent as much if not more on clothes, CDS, electronics that certainly do not last as long as an AG doll. My DD has played with her dolls for 6 years and we both still love them. Maybe your Mom is just not a doll person and doesn't understand how much fun collecting and playing with dolls can be. I imagine that many girls would be thrilled to have 2 AG dolls. Most of my DD's friends only have 1 AG. Maybe your Mom thinks you are getting older and will soon lose interest in dolls?

My goddaughter's best friend longs to have just one AG doll, but they are quite poor, and her mother just can't afford it. Another girl in our church has wanted one for a long time also, and her mother can't afford one either, so some friends finally took them out to Target and got an AG substitute there. I feel so badly for them, but I can't be getting AG dolls for everyone either--although I suppose I could give up on my birthday present for this year, and put my money where my mouth is.....
